Turkey was an INCREDIBLE week long field trip which I loved so much, so I was worried Jordan wouldn't meet the expectations I had for it. But I had a great time in Jordan too (even though it was a much shorter trip)! Our first day consisted of a bus ride to cross over from Israel into Jordan. It went pretty smoothly and didn't take very long (unlike the process to come back! See future post.) Once we entered Jordan, our first stop was to visit Mt. Nebo. This is where Moses viewed the promised land before he was translated. Incredible huh? Pretty neat to think of the events that happened there.
My roommate during Jordan, Kathryn! :) She's so great!
This is us standing on top of Mt. Nebo.
Madaba was our next stop. It was a neat little town that we drove through. It was fun to just watch the people (from the bus) and see all the different shops. We even saw a truck outside a restaurant that had the whole back filled with animals ready to be skinned (the guy was skinning them, right there in the truck on the street!) Talk about fresh lunch eh? ;) We went inside the St. George Church in Madaba, which was really beautiful. It was neat because it had a 6th century mosaic on the floor which includes the oldest surviving depiction (map) of Jerusalem. Because of this mosaic, various biblical and historical sites have been located and verified. Neat huh?
Dal in front of the Madaba mosaic.
The football shape part of it is the map of Jerusalem.
Next we went to Machaerus. The climb up the mountain pretty much killed us all, but it was so worth it. There was an incredible view, and it was neat to learn about this incredible fortress. This is the site where John the Baptist is believed to have been imprisoned and beheaded by Herod Antipas. It was neat to have a devotional there, talking about John the Baptist and his important role in preparing the way for our Savior (as well as assisting with the restoration of the gospel in our day). He really was an incredible man, one I look forward to meeting some day. :)
The view on top of Macaerus...it was incredible!
